The MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians and the town of McIntosh will celebrate “American Idol” contender Triston Harper with upcoming events that are free and open to the public.
Harper, a 15-year-old tribal member from McIntosh, made it all the way to the Top 5 of “Idol’s” 2024 season. The show’s celebrity judges – Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan – repeatedly praised him for the maturity of his voice, his authentic demeanor and his rapidly improving stagecraft.
Harper “has captured the hearts of Americans and become an inspiration for his hometown and all of Alabama as he continues to shine with his musical endeavors,” said an announcement for a planned concert and parade. “From humble beginnings to the national stage, Triston’s story is a true testament to the power of chasing your dreams!”
According to information provided by an organizer with the MOWA Band, the following events are planned:
Friday, May 24, 6 p.m. – “Triston Harper: The Dreamcatcher in Concert” will take place on the MOWA Choctaw Reservation at 1080 West Red Fox Road in Mt. Vernon, Ala. The show is expected to last until 8:30.
Lillie Steiner, executive director of the MOWA Choctaw Housing Authority, said that visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, but that coolers and alcoholic beverages are not allowed. Some food and beverage vendors will be on hand.
Saturday, May 25, noon – A homecoming parade will be held in McIntosh.
Saturday, May 25, 5 p.m. – The MOWA Choctaws will hold a Pow Wow in Harper’s honor. Steiner said the event will offer visitors a chance to learn about and experience the MOWA Choctaw culture. As at the concert, lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, but coolers and alcohol are not.
