National furniture chain files for bankruptcy, closing half its locations

Texas-based Conn’s HomePlus filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday.

A national furniture chain that’s been in existence for more than 130 years has filed for bankruptcy and is shuttering nearly half its 170 stores.

Texas-based Conn’s HomePlus filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday, CNN reported. The company had reported steep drops in sales and had recently been notified a delisting notice from NASDAQ after shares of the company fell more than 80%.

According to its website, Florida will lose the greatest number of Conn’s stores – 18 – followed by Texas (9), Arizona (7) and Colorado and Louisiana (6 each). One Conn’s store in Alabama is closing – the Birmingham store located at 9530 Parkway East in Roebuck. Conn’s also has Alabama locations in Homewood, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery.

In 2023, Conn’s bought Badcock Home Furniture & More, a southeastern furniture and homegoods store. Thirty-five of those stores will be closing, including Alabama locations at 372 Palisades Blvd. in Homewood, 101 Cracker Barrell Road in Fort Payne, 4321 University Drive in Huntsville, 714 Highway 78 in Jasper, 613 Martin Street North in Pell City and 22991 John T. Reid Pkwy in Scottsboro.
