Jeff Tedford will step aside from his role as Fresno State’s coach because of health concerns, he announced via social media on Monday.
New Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer worked under Tedford and then replaced him at Fresno State, so DeBoer took to X to share what Tedford has meant to him.
“Blessed to spend 2 amazing years with Coach Tedford and felt I learned something from him everyday!” DeBoer wrote. “An X and O genius, relentless competitor and so much more! Most importantly, an incredible person and family man who cared so much about his players and staff! Thank you coach!”
Tedford has been the coach at Fresno State the past two seasons after a three year stint from 2017-19. He also stepped aside from his job leading the Bulldogs in 2019 because of “heart-related issues,” per ESPN.
DeBoer was Fresno State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2017-18. He left for one season to be Indiana’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, then DeBoer returned to California to be the head coach of the Bulldogs from 2020-21. His work there earned him the opportunity to coach Washington the next two seasons. Then DeBoer was hired to replace Nick Saban at Alabama when the legendary coach retired in January.
