In most Birmingham suburbs, the cost of housing surpasses the statewide average.
The median monthly cost of housing in Alabama is $1,293, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
But in cities in the Birmingham metro, the average cost climbs to $1,619. That’s based on an analysis of monthly housing costs in 2022 in the 20 metro cities with more than 10,000 residents.
In 16 of those cities, the monthly housing costs are higher than the state average.
Mountain Brook, the wealthiest city in the metro area, is the most expensive with housing costs of $3,291 per month, the data shows. Center Point, northeast of the city, has the lowest monthly costs at $1,121.
Mountain Brook and Center Point also bookend the value of homes in the Birmingham metro, according to census data.
Owner-occupied homes with a mortgage in Mountain Brook are valued at an average of $764,000. Center Point’s average home value is $117,600.
Mountain Brook also has the highest real estate taxes with a median of $6,225, according to the Census data. Jasper, about 45 miles outside of Birmingham in Walker County, had the cheapest taxes at $578.
