Alabama’s Walton Goggins has earned an Emmy nomination for his role in the TV series “Fallout.”

Goggins, 52, a Birmingham native, is nominated in the category of Lead Actor in a Drama Series, competing against stars such as Idris Elba, Gary Oldman, Donald Glover and more. “Fallout” earned an nomination for Best Drama Series, as well, and 16 Emmy nods overall.

Nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles. (See a full list of nominees here.)

In “Fallout,” Goggins portrays Cooper “The Ghoul” Howard, one of the main characters in the post-apocalyptic series on Amazon Prime. In the TV show, which is based on a popular video game, Goggins plays a gunslinger who was alive when bombs were dropped on the United States, more than 200 years before the primary storyline.

His character has suffered from radiation, surviving nuclear war to become a bounty hunter who’s known for his “code of honor and ruthless demeanor,” according to Fallout Wiki. Part villain, part antihero, The Ghoul is a fan favorite. Goggins has said his inspirations for the role include actors from classic Westerns such as John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

This is the second Emmy nomination for Goggins, who also received a nod in 2011 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, for his work in FX’s “Justified.” The actor earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Boyd Crowder, a charismatic criminal often pitted against U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (played by Timothy Olyphant).

Goggins has a long list of TV credits that include standout roles in “The Righteous Gemstones,” “George & Tammy,” “Vice Principals,” “The Unicorn,” “The Shield,” “Six,” “Sons of Anarchy” and more. He’s also appeared in movies such as “Fatman,” “Tomb Raider” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Hateful Eight.”
