Sheffield police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl.
Police Chief Ricky Terry said the girl was shot at about 1 a.m. at 1006 S. Nashville Ave. Investigators believe the girl was not the intended target of the shooter.
Police said officers arrived at the scene to find the victim lying in the grass, shot in the back between the shoulder blades.
She had apparently been shot once. Her identity has not yet been released.
The shooting victim was taken to Helen Keller Hospital, where she died from her injuries, Terry said.
Detectives are in the process of interviewing witnesses.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sheffield police at (256) 386-5630.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family,” Terry said in a statement.
